In this study, we observed that bilateral LSCC dysplasia or aplasia was usually combined with other inner ear anomalies, resulting in profound bilateral hearing loss and vestibulopathy. Only one patient with bilateral LSCC anomalies showed asymmetric hearing loss.

In the fifth week of embryonic development, the superior semicircular canal develops, followed by the posterior semicircular canal and finally the lateral semicircular canal (LSCC), which is most prone to malformation.

Inner ear anomalies were observed in 14 patients (23.0%). Lateral semicircular canal (LSCC) dysplasia was the most common inner ear anomaly, with an incidence of 16.4%. The incidence was significantly higher on the pathologic side than on the unaffected side (P =0.002).

LSCC malformation, like other inner ear malformations such as large vestibular aqueduct and X-linked mixed deafness with perilymph gusher, can be associated with CHL, SNHL, or normal hearing. Children with unexplained conductive hearing loss often undergo exploratory surgery to improve hearing.
