Anthony Bennett actually had a more intriguing skillset (maybe other than nerlens who was hurt) than all of them as a heavy big man with versatility flashes. It was definitely a pure upside swing so I don’t really blame Cleveland. Maybe they thought he had some untapped athleticism as he appeared to be somewhat overweight in college

Bennett was actually a good player at UNLV but he shouldn’t have gone that high in his draft class. But I remember that draft class being considered the weakest NBA draft in recent memory. The other thing was that the sample size of Bennett college games was really small--he got hurt or something and so he did look good in a few games, but there wasn't a big enough sample. Because there were only a few games, and he played really well (good 3pt shooting even), that let the Cavs imagine him as who they wanted him to be.

Jun 13, 2023 · I don’t even consider Bennett a bust, just an insane overdraft and then a bad player from there. There were not great expectations draft night and was projected in the 7-10 range. He was an athletic theoretical forward who wasn’t super high energy or motivated and was beyond shocking as the #1 pick.

Bennett was a bad player in a fairly weak draft class. With hindsight Giannis should have gone first, but at the time was a skinny kid who had not played against real competition. Fultz’s draft has proven to have been absolutely stacked with many players looking like they are going to be long time high level contributors in the league.
