A man who fired a gun inside a Washington D.C. restaurant, motivated by a fake online conspiracy theory called “Pizzagate” nearly a decade ago, was shot and killed by North Carolina police during a weekend traffic stop.

Kannapolis police said Edgar Maddison Welch pointed a gun at officers on Saturday, two of whom then fired at him.

Police said Edgar Maddison Welch pulled out a gun during a traffic stop and when he did not drop it as instructed, was shot by police.

The 'Pizzagate' gunman, Edgar Maddison Welch, was killed after he was involved in a police officer-involved shooting during a traffic stop in North Carolina on Saturday, Jan. 4.

Edgar Welch fired an assault rifle inside a Washington, D.C., restaurant in December 2016 while claiming to investigate the "pizzagate" hoax.

He pled guilty to a to a federal charge of interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition, and a D.C. charge of assault with a dangerous weapon.
