A fast-moving wildfire destroyed a historic lodge and dozens of other structures on the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, forcing officials to close access to that area for the season, the park said Sunday.
The fire burning thousands of acres in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park saw “rapid fire spread” Sunday evening due to a wind event in the area, officials said.
The visitor center and a wastewater treatment plant were among the 50 to 80 structures lost, the park superintendent said.
