The DNR offers the following advice to avoid black bear encounters: Minimize attractive food around your house or campsite, including keeping garbage cans secured. Never approach a bear. Don't play dead and don't run, instead slowly back away and don't turn your back on the bear.

The woman, identified by the DNR as Karen Frye, reported the attack that happened near the town of Comstock in Barron County around 2 p.m. She was able to call 911 and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Frye was eventually transferred to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said the search is ongoing for the black bear behind an attack in Barron County.
