Zelensky and Leo held talks in Castel Gandolfo, a small Italian hill town near Rome, where the pope is taking a two-week vacation.

Pope Leo XIV met with children and adolescents participating in the Vatican’s summer camp for kids. Some 300 Ukrainian youth were also in the audience.

In addition, another 300 children and adolescents from Ukraine, hosted by Caritas Italy during the summer, participated in the encounter with Pope Leo XIV.

Pope Leo XIV said Ukraine is “martyred” and expressed his sorrow “for the prisoners and victims of this senseless war” caused by the invasion by Russia.
