The Mariners were already in territory that this organization has never before navigated, being one win away from their first World Series. They’re still there, after a 6-2 loss to the Blue Jays in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series on Sunday night.

The Seattle Mariners made the kind of mess that leaves a mark. Against the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 6, Seattle gave away bases on defense and handed extra outs back at the plate. It added up to a rare double whammy: three errors and three ground-into-double-plays.

Jesús Montero, a catcher and designated hitter over parts of five major league seasons with the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners, died Sunday as a result of injuries he sustained in a vehicular collision in his native Venezuela earlier this month.

One win from their first World Series, the Seattle Mariners never got off the ground Sunday night. Seattle grounded into inning-ending double plays in three straight turns at bat and made a season-high three errors in a in a 6-2 loss that forced the American League Championship Series to Game 7.

With the chance to clinch the first ever World Series berth, many Mariners fans made the trip to Toronto hoping to witness history.
