River firefighters arrived at the scene Sunday to find some of the trapped residents screaming for help out of the windows.
Local and state fire investigators are working to identify the origin and cause of the 5-alarm at Gabriel House on Oliver Street, officials said.
The exact cause of the fire is under investigation, but the DA’s office said it did not appear to be suspicious. The Firefighters Wives Association has set up a GoFundMe page to help those affected by the fire. So far, it has raised more than $30,000.
Nine residents died and about 30 other residents were transported for medical assistance in a Fall River assisted living facility.
