Another display of the northern lights could be visible this weekend in several U.S. states following a severe solar storm. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Space Weather Prediction Center forecast a planetary K-index -- which characterizes the magnitude of geomagnetic storms - of five out of a scale of nine for Friday and Saturday,

Weather organizations from around the world agree that the planet's average global surface temperature in 2024 could well have passed a crucial threshold meant to limit the worst effects of climate change.

The colorful northern lights may reveal themselves to a wide swath of Americans Friday night due to an impending solar storm forecast to reach Earth.

"The change of seasons causes surface melting far inland from the coastal ice front," glaciologist Christopher Shuman said.

"Once again, the temperature record has been shattered — 2024 was the hottest year since record keeping began in 1880."

BREVARD COUNTY • FLORIDA — 2024 has officially been declared the warmest year on record by NASA since global temperature measurements began in 1880. The announcement comes from a collaborative analysis involving scientists at NOAA and other leading climate researchers who rely on millions of temperature measurements collected worldwide.

The Los Angeles area faces devastating fires exacerbated by dry conditions and Santa Ana winds, with the Palisades and Eaton fires drawing significant attention due to their rapid spread and the substantial efforts by NASA and local agencies to monitor and contain them.

For Toledo, 2024 was unofficially the warmest year on record, because missing data from August and December meant the National Weather Service couldn’t technically crown the past year. However, the First Alert Weather team used nearby data to fill in the gaps. As for the entire planet, NASA’s findings were very similar.
