This is the second meeting between Alex Soros and Muhammad Yunus in three months. The duo had met in New York in October - weeks after Yunus took charge following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime.

Awami League has announced a series of political programs, including a general strike and a nationwide blockade.

This comes as the first major demonstration by the Awami League, whose most of the leaders have either been arrested or underground since the fall of the Hasina-led government on August 5 last year following a students-led anti-discrimination movement.

Alam, who played a key role in the uprising that toppled Hasina’s government and led to her exile on 5 August last year, added that only Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami, and other “pro-Bangladesh” groups would continue their political activities in the country.

The Awami League has been virtually out of the open political landscape since August 5, 2024, with most of its leaders and Hasina’s cabinet members either in jail on murder and other criminal charges or on the run at home and abroad.
