Buffalo is still an affordable place to live, buy a home, purchase groceries and make a living. Most of all, it seems to escape many natural disasters that a larger city – especially those in California − experiences. Since moving to the West Coast, my son has seen earthquakes, floods, mudslides and extreme fires to name a few disasters.

The most competitive markets this year share characteristics such as relative affordability and “supply that trails demand,” according to Zillow. Taking the top spot in the ranking is Buffalo, New York, followed by Indianapolis and Providence, Rhode Island.

Without profound political and cultural change, saving the state will be an exceptionally tall order.
