The protests began Friday after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents carried out coordinated raids across Los Angeles, detaining dozens of workers at warehouses and other worksites. The arrests sparked immediate backlash, with demonstrators converging outside federal buildings, blocking freeways, and in some cases clashing with police.

As protests continue in Los Angeles, hundreds of U.S. Marines have been deployed to the city as President Donald Trump and Governor Gavin Newsom spar over law enforcement response.

Newsom lambasted Trump, calling him a President who “wants to be bound by no law or constitution, perpetuating a unified assault on American traditions.” And he repeated his assertion that Trump was “fanning the flames” in Los Angeles “on purpose.”

Monday's protests were largely calmer than Sunday's clashes. California officials insist that the 4,000 National Guards troops and 700 active duty Marines en route to L.A. are an unnecessary abuse of power by Trump.

4:56 p.m. EDT U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer turned down Newsom’s request for an emergency ruling that would have blocked federal troop deployment in Los Angeles, giving Trump until Wednesday at 2 p.m. EDT to file a response to Newsom’s lawsuit (Newsom can file his response to Trump by Thursday at 12 p.m. EDT).

As the Pentagon crafts rules of engagement for Marines deployed to an American city, it's clear that the president is playing with fire.

If we didn’t do it [deploy the National Guard], there wouldn’t be a Los Angeles. It would be burning today just like the houses were burning a number of months ago,” Trump said,

California sued Trump over the deployment, with the state attorney general arguing that the president had “trampled” the state’s sovereignty. California leaders accused Trump of fanning protesters’ anger, leading crowds to block off a major freeway and set self-driving cars on fire.

Attorney General Pam Bondi insisted that the federal government has jurisdiction over California in prosecuting people involved in the Los Angeles riots. In an appearance on Fox News’s Hannity, Bondi was asked if the supremacy clause was an issue in deciding jurisdiction in prosecuting rioters.
