United Airlines is facing a financial hit and potential long-term reputational harm as flight delays and cancellations pile up due to ongoing disruptions at Newark airport - one of its largest hubs and among the busiest in the country.

The Federal Aviation Administration will meet with airline representatives Wednesday, seeking to cut flights going into and out of Newark Liberty International Airport amid mounting delays, hundreds of cancellations and growing frustration among passengers.

United Airlines has sharply cut flights at its Newark hub and wants the FAA to impose new limitations on flights there to address ongoing delays. United said on Tuesday it expects to temporarily cut a few additional flights. Newark has also been hit by a series of telecom outages.
