The big complex out in the Everglades has plenty of beds, and it’s certainly meant to be a short-term stopover, but it’s no Holiday Inn.
The camp appears designed to inflict suffering on detainees and to allow Florida politicians to exploit migrant pain for political gain.
When the Miami Herald/Tampa Bay Times published a list Sunday of more than 700 detainees held at the A lligator Alcatraz detention facility in South Florida, it confirmed what many have suspected all along: Despite political claims to the contrary, many of the migrants being detained have no U.S. criminal convictions or pending charges.
“Alligator Alcatraz” is the insulting name Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has given the inhumane detention center he has erected in the Everglades to house immigrants rounded up in the Trump administration’s draconian assault on allegedly undocumented people living in the United States.
Florida established the Everglades immigration detention center in an effort to help the Trump administration meet its deportation goals.
