Mexico says it sent 26 alleged cartel figures to the United States at the request of the Trump administration and to prevent these individuals from running their illicit businesses from Mexican prisons.

The transfer follows news that President Trump ordered the Pentagon to begin using military force against certain Latin American drug cartels.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum told reporters Wednesday the handover was a “sovereign decision” on the part of Mexico.
