The Trump administration’s federal hiring freeze has stopped the onboarding of thousands of seasonal federal firefighters as the next fire season approaches.

A federal judge on Thursday said he stood ready to enforce an order he issued blocking U.S. President Donald Trump's administration from freezing federal grants, loans and other financial assistance after Democratic-led states said billions of dollars in funding was still being tied up.

Courts have blocked the order, but some nonprofits have still had to furlough workers and put projects on hold.

A new coalition of nonprofits came together overnight to challenge a seemingly sweeping order from the Trump administration last week pausing trillions of dollars in federal funding.

The Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon is among those that received the notice from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, dated Tuesday. The nonprofit was told that its grant from U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services was frozen “effective immediately.”

Rhode Island’s chief federal judge on Thursday extended a temporary restraining order that blocks the Trump administration’s push to freeze federal assistance for at least another 14 days as the case continues to progress through court.

The case is scheduled to reconvene in-person at the U.S. District Court of Rhode Island on Feb. 21, at the request of several state attorneys general to offline.
