While the Mets called the injury just an elbow sprain, Mendoza and president of baseball operations David Stearns confirmed that there is ligament damage in Núñez’s elbow. The reliever previously had Tommy John surgery in 2021 after spraining the UCL in his right elbow.

The Mets’ pitching ranks continue to thin out due to an onslaught of injuries that claimed two more arms on Thursday. The team announced prior to their series finale against the Milwaukee Brewers that starting pitcher Paul Blackburn was placed on the 15-day injured list retroactive to June 30 with a right shoulder impingement.

3:20pm: Núñez tells Anthony DiComo of MLB.com that Tommy John surgery is a possibility for him. Presumably, he will undergo some more tests before a final determination is made.
