Anthony Albanese has wrapped up his G20 jaunt to South Africa by recommitting Australia to global climate action and open trade in a joint declaration broadly seen as rebuking Donald Trump.

The G20 also issued its strongest climate statement yet, estimating that developing countries will need $5.8-5.9 trillion by 2030 to meet climate goals and urging a scale-up of climate finance “from billions to trillions.

G20 envoys have agreed on a draft leaders' declaration ahead of this weekend's summit in Johannesburg without U.S. input, four sources familiar with the matter said on Friday.

Critics argue the Phoenix Declaration, now adopted by Florida, is too politically motivated, while supporters claim it refocuses education on essential values.

South Africa promoted it as a victory for the first G20 summit to be held in Africa and its aim to put problems, especially affecting poor countries, at the top of the agenda.
